AI Research Tools for Literature Reviews

SciSpace, also known as Typeset.io, is an innovative platform powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to help researchers publish their works. It allows you to search for related papers, summarize text, create citations, and detect AI in scholarly writing. There are two ways to use this tool, one is to install the Chrome extension, SciSpace Copilot, and the other way is to log in and create a personal account from the website.

Key features and functions using SciSpace include:

  • AI Chat for Scientific PDFs: Have a chat with your research papers, including asking questions and receiving explanations.
  • Literature Review Tool: Conduct quick and efficient literature reviews, and extract key data from PDFs
  • Citation Generator: Generate citations in the correct format
  • AI Paraphraser: Rewrite texts for better clarity
  • AI Detector: Detect the AI-generated content to maintain the integrity of the literature review
  • Detection of AI-generated content

Consensus is an AI-powered academic search engine designed to help students and researchers search, summarize and understand scholarly papers quickly. With its natural language processing capabilities, Consensus analyzes research articles, providing concise summaries and highlighting important points.

Consensus sources its data from the Semantic Scholar database, which includes over 200 million academic papers from various disciplines. The platform updates its dataset monthly, ensuring access to the latest research in your field.

Some features of Consensus:

  • Summary: Consensus can analyze and extract key information from research articles, providing concise summaries. You to quickly grasp the main points of a paper without having to read the entire document.
  • Consensus Meter: The Consensus Meter indicates the level of agreement among the summarized papers on a particular topic.
  • Filter: You can filter search results based on study types (such as meta-analysis, systematic review, RCT, case report) and study details (including controlled studies, human studies, and sample size). It also offers the filter of SJR Quartile rating for journals, which can measures the influence of journals within a domain.

Please note that the availability of specific features may vary based on the institution's subscription or access level.

Scite_ helps your understand an article by extracting its citations and determining whether it has received support, mentions, or contrasting references from other publications. With the Smart Citations feature, you not only know the number of citations an article has received but also the specific context in which those citations occur.

Some features of scite:

  • Reference Check: Upload a manuscript PDF and quickly observe how its references have been cited elsewhere, including checking for retractions, expressions of concern, and other editorial notices.
  • Visualization of the search: Discover and evaluate how articles cite each other through interactive scite Visualizations.
  • Search: Discover whether citing publications are providing support or have different results than the cited work.
  • Creating dashboard: Allows you to create custom dashboards to better evaluate and keep track of groups of articles or your reference manager library.

Smart Citation Badge

Scite launches the extension that allows users to get access to the scite data in the form of scite badges on search results, references, citations and more.

Elicit uses language models to help you automate research workflows, like parts of the literature review. Elicit can help you search for relevant papers without an exact keyword match, extract key information from papers and summarize several papers which are relevant to your question. Rather than using keywords to conduct your search, you can enter a research question, Elicit will display relevant papers on the left and summaries of key information about those papers in an easy-to-use table on the right.

Some features of Elicit:

  • Quickly locate papers on a research topic
  •  Analyze and organize multiple papers (you can upload your own PDFs)
  • Summarize evidence from the top cited papers on a research topic
  • Explore and brainstorm research questions
  • Identify search terms
  • Define terms
  • Narrow or adjust your research direction

ChatPDF is an AI-powered PDF assistant tool that you can use to analyze, summarize and interact with PDF documents. Once PDFs are uploaded, you can "chat" with ChatPDF through simple commands or questions in plain English. You don't need to know any coding. Common things you can do include asking ChatPDF to summarize a PDF, extract specific facts/findings, answer questions about concepts, generate keyword summaries and more. ChatPDF can be used to help students and researchers make the most of their time by increasing their efficiency and productivity when working with PDF files.

Some features of ChatPDF:

  • Summarize information included in PDF files to aid in comprehension.
  • Answer questions about text included in a PDF file.
  • Analyze documents to aid in the quick extraction of information.
  • Interpret and translate PDF files in any language.

Research Rabbit is a literature review mapping tool and discovery platform for researchers, intending to make it easier to discover relevant papers to your research. It uses AI to recommend similar articles based on an article you initially provide or find, building a collection for you. It also creates a visualisation map of the articles it finds, which mostly come from open sources.

Working Concept:

You start by using one or more papers (called seed papers), and the tool will find more papers relevant to the topic of interest (which is dictated by the seed papers you previously selected). ResearchRabbit scans for any publicly available source online and selects papers based on their similarities. However, it seems to only work for scholarly papers and therefore is unlikely to find other sources of information that are not journal articles, such as books.

Semantic Scholar

  • A free, AI-powered research and discovery tool developed by the non-profit Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
  • Helps researchers navigate the ever-growing scientific literature in all domains
  • Calculates citations counts and H-index
  • Identifies Highly Influential Citations
  • Links to a paper or the publishers website

Connected Papers

  • A tool that uses similarity to identify related papers based on one paper that you have already identified
  • Each node in the literature map represents a related paper, with the size of the node indicating the number of citations the paper received
  • The colour of the node indicates the publication year of the paper

Scholarcy

  • An online article summarizer tool that quickly breaks down research articles, reports, and book chapters into bite-sized sections for easy assessment

Perplexity AI

  • An AI-powered search engine that focuses on academic papers
  • Uses AI to identify relevant papers and provide summaries of each paper
